They should OWN business chat at the very least but they bungled that horribly and Slack/Teams are the clear winners. I tried just about ever one of their attempts at chat and they always felt unfinished and would stay in that state for years until a new chat platform by Google came out. They had gtalk 6 years before iMessage first debuted and instead of improving on that platform they decided to create an untold number of “successors” that had some new features but left behind (important) features of their predecessors. Till the day I die I will never understand how Google fucked up so royally when it came to messaging. SMS fallback works for iOS because you don't get any choice in your default SMS app and Apple controls all iOS devices (as opposed to Google and OEMs). Now the recipient has two disjointed conversations and has to try to piece it together, which may be okay if they understand how everything works, but in any case it's a terrible experience. They get some messages in iMessage as SMS and some in Allo, all out of sync, while the sender sees a single thread. Imagine if Allo had SMS fallback, and you're messaging an iPhone user (who has Allo installed) while going in and out of data reception. There is this weird fetish over SMS fallback as the end-all solution, but it generally only appeases a small portion of users that care to understand what's happening. They had to remove it due to user confusion.

Sorry Google but no one's going to use your brand new RCS in my personal group/community.I'm not so sure it would've made a difference, given the App Preview Messaging feature and the SMS relay they implemented ( full details)Ī few years prior, they went full steam with Hangouts, including fully integrating SMS into merged threads. I asked as many family members and friends to switch to RCS several months ago when the announcement was made that Google activated RCS for all but my groups responded, "nah we're good with using Facebook Messenger/Whatsapp/iPhone." Sigh now we get RCS.ĩ5% of friends and family are on iPhone now, AND even if they aren't, I'm using Whatsapp and Facebook's messenger on everyone else.

Now almost 10 years has gone by and finally, all Android users get RCS only because Google got screwed over several attempted deals with carriers banding together leaving Google out of the picture. The list of reasons why Google should have made an implemented a proper competitor to iMessage SOONER goes on and on. Now that all Android users have an official "Android iMessage", something we Android loyalists have been "dreaming" and complaining about for literally a decade, something Google has been constantly setting aside and making excuses for, something we thought with each iteration of a new messaging app would finally get (like Google Hangouts or Allo) a key factor in what might/could even have pushed Google's Android into a more popular OS (because literally years back people have started that the number one reason why A LOT of people picked iPhone was iMessage. Keep in mind this took several years of back and forth talks. This made Google so frantic, that they decided just to release the damn service on its own as well. While other carriers started to band together behind Google's back and doing it on their own. They took so long doing it, trying to work with other carriers to make this happen. It's been a few months now that everyone who has the Google messages app can immediately start sending RCS messages.
